Summer holidays
Various summer commitments, including moving house, mean that posts on NotPop will be on pause for the next few weeks. Be patient :)

A compilation by Robert Crumb… Enough said.
The notes and illustrations alone make this hugely enjoyable.
Essential.
Leona Gabriel - ‘Liva’ (Martinique, French Carribean, 1932) from the album ‘Hot Women’

Excellent! I managed to snag a copy of the out-of-pressing first album from Alela.
She really should re release this one. Try ebay.
As sublime as her first proper release The Pirate’s Gospel.
Rumored to be nearing completion on her next major release. I can’t wait.
Go over to Daytrotter for some free tunes… Yeah! Spread the word…

The first post on NotPop from a Maltese band. Fronted by the voice of Alison Galea this is their forth album and very strong it is to.
Beangrowers - ‘Not In A Million Lovers’ from the album ‘Not In A Million Lovers’

Her second album is a lovely folksy acoustic collection of very interesting cover versions.
The third album from her, and her new band, is out soon and I am looking forward to it very much.
Check out the UK tour dates on site/MySpace for later 2008.
Kate Rogers - ‘St. Eustacia (Live)’ from her first album ‘St. Eustacia’

This is a really mixed bag of tunes. Blues, Soul, Jazz and Gospel all make an appearance. Not all the tracks work for me, but she has one fine voice. An outstanding debut.
Beth Rowley - ‘Almost Persuaded’ from the album ‘Little Dreamer’

A bit of a slow burner that doesn’t push too many boundaries, but none the less, a pleasant first full outing for Chandra and Leigh.
The Watson Twins - ‘Sky Open Up’ from the album ‘Fire Songs’

Spurred on by that oh so catchy tune ‘Chick Habit’ used at the final scene of Death Proof, and recently used in a TV ad for Renault, I have been thoroughly enjoying this album by Elinor Blake aka April March.
All good Ye-Ye fun.
April March - ‘Mignonette’ from the album ‘Chrominance Decoder’

A great compilation of songs by the French Ye-Ye style singer Isabelle Marie Anne Gall.
You will know this albums title track from the re-recording by April March that was used in the final scene of Death Proof.
Here is the original from 1965.
France Gall - ‘Laisse Tomber Les Filles’

Lali Puna haven’t released anything since 2004, so it was a pleasant surprise to come across this remix album. Always a treat to listen to Valerie Trebeljahr’s vocals.
Lali Puna - ‘Micronomic’ originally from the album ‘Faking the Books’

Stephen Mork is on his third vocalist, Laura, on this jolly synthpop release, including cover versions of Duran Duran and ABBA…
Interestingly he has decided to pull down his website and rely solely on his MySpace presence.
I am not sure that is a wise move, but I wish him well with that.
Somegirl - ‘Careless Memories’ from the album ‘The Velvet Hour’
Check out their label A Different Drum

A lovely breezy self release from 2005 that has thankfully been picked up by the Nettwerk label for wider distribution.
Jenny Owens Young - ‘Fuck I Was’ from the album ‘Batten the Hatches’

A lovely modern folksy release. Totally on the acceptable side of folk.
Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - Live at the Shepley Spring Festival 2007

Gwynneth Haynes fronts this hugely talent band from the states.
Kooky and theatrical. Well worth exploring.
Sophe Lux - ‘Target Market’ from the album ‘Waking The Mystics’

The hugely entertaining Miss Li has a double CD out. The first CD being selections from her 3 wonderful albums, the other CD contains unreleased jems (possibly more enjoyed by those that love her already, I do).
If you are new to Miss Li, then go for God Put a Rainbow in the Sky CD and work back from there.
You won’t be disappointed.
Miss Li - ‘Oh Boy’ from the album ‘Late Night Heartbroken Blues’
Miss Li - ‘High On You’ from the album ‘Late Night Heartbroken Blues’
