Janelle Monáe – The ArchAndroid

Janelle Monae - Archandroid

Parts II and III of Janelles concept narrative, heavily influenced by the Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, on this release.
Stunning. Played it back to back three times the first time I heard it. Don’t let the first single Tightrope fool you, each track is totally different, and brilliant. Check out the whole album on her MySpace page.
Definitely in my top ten so far this year.

School of Seven Bells – Disconnect From Desire

School of Seven Bells - Disconnect from Desire

Sisters Claudia and Alejandra Deheza, along with Benjamin Curtis provide a second helping of dreamy sounds.
Not a massive drift away from their brilliant debut release Alpinisms (2008) but who cares, it’s great stuff.

Eliza Doolittle – Eliza Doolittle

Eliza Doolittle - Eliza Doolittle

An upbeat bouncy debut release for the summer months is out today.
She is playing support for Paloma Faith later in the year, which is cool.

Music For a Great Dad

This is quite a personal post, which I never do, but one I hope you will enjoy ;)
June is one of those months that seems our family has managed to condense most of our birthdays into the same month.
Hence I have been busy and not posting here…
To cut a long story short, I decided to compile a CD for my Dad of all the tracks that he used to play that really made an impact on me.
It was quite an emotional journey, but worth it :)

This is the track listing I ended up with:

01 The Beatles – Help
02 The Moody Blues – Nights In White Satin
03 Fairport Convention – Hanging Song
04 Procol Harum – A Salty Dog
05 The Beatles – I am The Walrus
06 ELO – Mr Blue Sky
07 Procol Harum – Whiter Shade of Pale
08 The Beatles – A Day In The Life
09 Fleetwood Mac – The Chain
10 The Rolling Stones – Paint It Black
11 Mamas and Papas – Monday Monday
12 The Kinks – Sunny Afternoon

But then I got obsessive and had to find videos for all those tracks for a DVD version…

Here is one taster of some truly retro loveliness

Procol Harum – ‘A Salty Dog’ (Live Pop2 1971)

What a great Dad I have that played all those lovely tracks for me and influenced me so much.

The Girl & The Robot – The Beauty Of Decay

The Girl and The Robot - The Beauty Of Decay

Almost retro 80‘s synth sounds from vocalist ‘Plastique’ and electro genius ‘Deadbeat’.
A punchy debut that has been looping on my playlists for the last few weeks, and I am not tiring of it.
