    Sol Seppy

    (Slight spelling mistake!)

  7. the oracle on May 7th, 2008

Good to have you back after a week away, I missed the blog even though I’ve never heard of most of these arteeests.
Anyway, a suggestive for the applecart is Leila. Considerably NOT!pop she is, good, electronica with a bent for illicit tunes and not so obvious ear for a song. Enjoy

  8. the oracle on May 17th, 2008

Ladytron new album Volcifero out in a couple of weeks. Not strictly female but who cares.

New Portishead album – Third – madly depressing, just the way I like it.

Sainkho Namtchylak – cos i read “The Wire”!!! best album “stepmother city”, tuuvan throat singing like you’ve never heard before.

  9. the oracle on May 17th, 2008

XIX – a New York band whose vocals come from Mimi Goese who has previously sung on a couple of Moby songs. Mimi was also a founder member of the much missed Hugo Largo group from the late 80′s. Reminiscent of a lighter Nico, dead pan vocals and done accompaniment.

Bat for lashes not too far away, speak soon.

  10. the oracle on May 17th, 2008

the above should read “drone accompaniment” !! of course.

  11. Sean on May 31st, 2008

Holly Crap! I have not been getting the posts from this page… Me Bad! Full respect to Oracle for the heads up on those (some done already).
I will totally check out XIX. You are awesome as ever with your suggestives.

  12. the oracle on July 22nd, 2008

This month’s suggestives are, in no particular order

Josephine Foster, just the right side of experimental but listenable.

The Knife – brother , sister act with a panchent for wearing crows head death masks whilst performing live- also some of the best videos, check out the web site http://www.theknife.net (video for the track Silent Shout officially the most disturbing)

Abraham – just one album released in 2000, “Blue for the Most”.

Client – girls singing in regional accents way before it was deemed “the way to sell to the masses”!!

A finally , a fella!!!! – Paul Hartnoll’s album “The Ideal Condition” draws on the more melodic elements of his time in Orbital and even manages to rope in Robert Smith on one track.

  13. the oracle on September 13th, 2008

Good to have you back, Mr N

  14. Sean on September 17th, 2008

A bit hit and miss, but ongoing :)

  15. Wistaire on October 11th, 2008

I don’t know if she’s on the site yet but I thought I’d mention Vienna Teng to you. Esp. Blue Caravan is hauntingly beautiful :)

  16. Sean on October 13th, 2008

Lovely stuff. Thanks for the tip John!

  20. Sean on January 4th, 2009

Re Sarah Blasko: I must give her album another listen. Thanks for the reminder Yen Peng :)

  21. Simon T on February 13th, 2009

Ah, just found this page! And see that someone else has suggested Kathryn Williams, though they spelt her name wrong (Jasmine Hoop very good, but the album version is better than the single version, I reckon) – but nobody mentioned Bic Runga. And I second Heather Nova!

  22. Simon T on February 13th, 2009

Maybe worth checking out A Fine Frenzy too…

UPDATE: Posted here, Thanks Simon T!

  23. Sean on February 13th, 2009

Thanks for the comments and suggestions Simon. I must revisit Bic Runga, and of course Heather.

Hey, how about Chairlift? Apple used their song for last year’s iPod nano ad. Or was it this year? I don’t know, I don’t live in the States.

  41. Sean on September 19th, 2009

Thanks for reminding me Yen Peng – I will do a post on their 2008 album ‘Does You Inspire You’ in the next few days.

Jesca Hoop – former nanny to Tom Waits!!!
But she really can sing, – no really!!!!

As recommended by Alfie Warner (he has good taste).

  48. Sean on November 23rd, 2009

    Hi Sean,

You must check out the amazing Susanne Sundfør from Norway! You will find all the usual info on MySpace, Spotify, Wikipedia, etc. but just listen to her sing live…

  52. Sean on March 28th, 2010

    Wonderful voice… Thanks John :)

  53. the oracle on September 28th, 2010

I know you probably saw it on Jools last week, but Rumur was really very good, album is out 1st November “Seasons of my Soul”.
My first impression was someone who is so good that they don’t appear to be trying too hard. Very classy lady.

  54. Sean on September 29th, 2010

Hello O. No, I missed that. Will check it out asap.
    Cheers ;)
    Update: Rumer, not Rumur:)

  55. Simon T on January 17th, 2011

Can’t remember if I’ve asked you on here before, but have you heard Minnie Driver’s albums? They’re amongst my favourites – surprised she didn’t do well with them. Check out the songs ‘Down’, ‘Everything I’ve Got in My Pocket’ or ‘Coming Back To Life’ – but all the songs are brilliant, except her cover of ‘Hungry Heart’ which didn’t work for me.

  56. Sean on January 18th, 2011

Hi Simon. I didn’t know she had a singing career as well as acting… I will have to check her albums out, cheers ;)

  57. Matt Grellert on March 11th, 2011

Selah Sue is just delicious to hear!

Just discovered Jenny Wilson (Not Pop archive March 2009), her latest album called Love and Youth is equally as good.

Also Agnes Obel “Philharmonics” Annie Anxiety “Songs from the coal mine canary”.

Been on a bit of a soul trip lately, recommendations include Bettye Lavette “I’ve got my own hell to raise”, and “The Scene of the Crime”.
Ann Peebles “I can’t stand the rain”.

  63. Sean on April 2nd, 2011

@ Matt – Very much like the Brigitte Duo… Looking forward to that release this month. Thanks for letting me get obsessed with them ;)

  64. Sean on April 2nd, 2011

    @ the oracle
Dude, as always, thanks for the suggestives…
However, I must correct you for some of our younger listeners…

Jenny Wilson – ‘Love and Youth‘ was her 2005 release, and a fine album indeed. But ‘Hardships!‘ from 2009 far surpasses that.

Bettye Lavette over works her voice range in my opinion… She has done some great tracks, but.
She murdered pretty much every track on her 2010 Interpretations The British Rock Songbook.

Ann Peebles – You are not wrong with that, her 1970 album ‘Part Time Love’ with ‘I cant’t Stand the Rain’ is indeed a classic.

Annie Anxiety AKA Little Annie AKA Annie Bandez, has been pumping lovely stuff out for ages – yep, great stuff. Check out her collaborative works on her Wikipedia page.

Agnes. Fantastic. You surpass your self with that chilled out suggestive my friend.

  65. John F on April 17th, 2011

    Lia Ices – I can’t stop listening!

  66. Sean on April 19th, 2011

    Damn good heads up John.
Deff made my hairs do something…
    Nice one.

  67. the oracle on May 25th, 2011

    Glass Prayer

Sarah Nixey – Brave tin Soldiers

    Trost

  68. the oracle on May 25th, 2011

    Also

Jenny Wilson – new album “Blazing

    Mimi Goese – Soak

    Jenny Hval – Viscera

    Austra – Feel it Break

  69. yenpeng on July 5th, 2011

It’s been some time since I popped in for a visit, and wow, you’re still doing a great job with the blog! How about trying Karima Francis? She’s got this beautiful deep voice, almost growling when she does powerful high notes.

  70. the oracle on July 15th, 2011

Alice Gold – Seven Rainbows – excellent

  71. the oracle on July 29th, 2011

Take a listen to Jesse Sykes and the Hereafter – Marble Son is the latest album but all previous long players are worth investigating.

Amy Lavere – best album is latest one called “Stranger Me”, but again her previous 2 are also pretty good.

  72. Matt Grellert on October 26th, 2011

Pretty sure you’re gonna like this one. :-)

  73. the oracle on December 3rd, 2011

Suggestive is a band called “Peggy Sue” whose latest album is called Acrobats. Its produced by John Parrish so the comparisons may be obvious, but they have a individual take on things which I just can’t stop listening to.

  74. the oracle on December 3rd, 2011

Soley – “We Sink” – what the word beguiling was meant for.

  75. the oracle on December 3rd, 2011

Dillon – “The Silence Kills” -

  76. Sean on December 3rd, 2011

“Suggestive is a band called “Peggy Sue” whose latest album is called Acrobats. Its produced by John Parrish so the comparisons may be obvious, but they have a individual take on things which I just can’t stop listening to.”

Possibly the best album of 2011

  77. John F on January 25th, 2012

My latest ‘find’ is Wendy McNeill – have been playing nothing else for the last two weeks!

  78. Sean on January 25th, 2012

    Hi John – I did a post on her 2006 album http://notpop.co.uk/wendy-mcneill-the-wonder-show/2008/04/12/
but have been lax and not kept up with her since. Good to hear the accordion in use. Thanks for the reminder.

  79. John F on January 25th, 2012

Her latest album, ‘For the Wolf a Good Meal’ is quite wonderful!

  80. John F on March 13th, 2012

    Ana Silvera – excellent!

  81. Matt Grellert on May 5th, 2012

These are my two personal favorites from American Idol 2011.
This duo performance worked out pretty well.
