Hanne Hukkelberg – Blood From a Stone
I have always liked the dark edge that Hanne has had.
And no change on her latest album.

A totally bonkers 4 some from Norway.
Great stuff!
Katzenjammer – ‘A Bar in Amsterdam’ from the album ‘Le Pop’

New album out this month, so I have been revisiting her first two lovely releases.
Hanne Hukkelberg – ‘The Northwind’ (live) from the album ‘Rykestraße 68’

Some lovely Electro-pop from Norwegian Annie Lilia Berge Strand.
This is her debut from 2004 and highly enjoyable it is to, nicely upbeat.
She is due to release her second album sometime this year.
Annie – ‘Chewing Gum’ from the album ‘Anniemal’

Her fifth album, but the first I have heard.
Deep and powerful stuff lyrically.
A tad melancholy, but she is confronting her troubled past/present.
Great voice and lovely minimal production throughout.
Maria Mena – ‘All This Time’ from the album ‘Cause And Effect’

Not usually my cup of tea this rock stylee.
But I really like this debut.
Ida Maria – ‘Oh My God’ from the album ‘Fortress Round My Heart’

A lurverly jazz release from last year by the Norwegian singer/songwriter Silje Nergaard.
Silje Nergaard – Live at the Paradiso 2008

A wonderfully restrained album. Check out her tracks on MySpace.
Silje Nes – ‘Giant Disguise (Live)’ from the album ‘Ames Room’

I have really been getting into this Norwegian. You can’t go wrong with any of her releases, but Idjagieđas was my first introduction to her.
Mari Boine – ’Vuoi Vuoi Mu’ from the album ‘Idjagieđas’

Another wonderful set of songs from the talented Ane Brun.
Smother than previous releases, but totally engaging.
Go buy it over at her website.
Ane Brun – ‘The Treehouse Song’ from the album ‘Changing Of The Seasons’

Another excellent artist to be exported from Norway. This is her first lovely release to be followed up by three more that she is working on now. I can’t wait.
Reminds me of Jem/Imogen Heap/Bjork
Kate Havnevik – ‘Unlike Me‘ from the album ‘Melankton‘
Kate Havnevik – ‘New Day‘ (Live/Acoustic at Mo Pitkin’s) from the album ‘Melankton‘
Kate Havnevik – ‘Show Me Love‘ (Live/Acoustic at Mo Pitkin’s)

The hugely talented singer/songwriter Ane Brun has released the first single from her up and coming album “Changing of the Seasons” which is due for release in March 2008.
I can’t seem to find anywhere to buy the single online yet, but here is the video for it.
Pop over to her website to subscribe to the newsletter to get the heads up on the album release date. Hopefully you will be able to buy it via her web store.

A quick update on Susanna And The Magical Orchestra from my earlier post this week.
A 2006 release of cover versions the like of which you have never heard.
In a similar way Stina Nordenstam deconstructed familiar songs on her brilliant cover version CD “People Are Strange”, Susanna does an equally superb job of totally reworking all the covers on this album beautifully.
Susanna – “Love Will Tear Us Apart (Again)” from the album “Melody Mountain”

Vocalist Susanna Carolina Wallumrød does a cracking job of massaging melancholia out of the songs on this album. She totally changes the meaning of Dolly Partons’ “Jolene” with her sparse vocal working of it.
The rest of the album is equally atmospheric and not as bleak as you may first think.

Susanna And The Magical Orchestra – “Jolene” from the album “List Of Lights And Buoys”

Recommended to me by The Oracle I have been listening to Anjas’ “Briefly Shaking” and “Ballon Mood“. Both are nicely moody affairs, with some great sound constructions.
All in all good stuff.
Anja Garbarek – “The Last Trick” from the album “Briefly Shaking”
Anja Garbarek – “Stay Tuned” from the album “Smiling & Waving”
You can buy her CDs on ITunes Store or MSN Music.
